Sister Duo Shines
The Henderson Girls Transform Their Club with Talent, Spirit and Leadership.
Two young female entrepreneurs, at the early stages of their bowling journey have not only achieved singles and pairs victories but have also contributed to Caltowie Bowling Club maintaining top-notch greens within their association.
Caltowie Bowling Club are very fortunate to have two young ladies play for them. They are sisters with a family history of being good sportswomen. In addition, through their businesses, have helped sponsor new shirts and logo’s.
The Henderson Girls come from a family of sportspeople, with most sports being played at high levels.
Jane Henderson is Caltowie Bowling Club’s greenkeeper. How many female greenkeepers are there in Australia, let alone South Australia? Under her care for the last twelve months, their greens have improved to become one of the better greens in their Association. Living nearby, Jane has been able to spot any changes and act immediately.
Jane has been a bowler for two years, prior to that she bowled occasionally. Last season she played three in Ladies Midweek and showed off even more of her abilities. Jane has taken part in all club games and has shown her ability.
This coming season Jane will be Caltowie Bowling Club’s caterer and with one event already under her belt, shows she can handle anything. She has also acted as secretary when their current secretary has been unavailable.
Jane runs her own gardening business called ‘Why Worry’. She is also part of the Hendowie Merino Stud which is her sister Alison’s business.
Alison is the older of the two girls [as they call them]. This past season has been Alison’s first as a bowler, but like Jane has helped-out when needed beforehand.
Alison put her hand up to be Junior Vice President and has also helped with secretarial when needed. Her business is Hendowie Merino Stud and as many farmers would know, is not an easy job at any time, let alone for a young lady. Alison plays most positions and with Kaye Bottrall, went on to win the Club Pairs and became runner up in the Association Champion of Champion pairs, not bad for a first-year player.
Both girls play both Thursday Ladies, when work allows, and open gender Saturdays in their highest divisions.
This season past [2023-24], they played off for the Club Singles with Jane being the winner and on her birthday! While Caltowie are a small club, these two girls have increased their competitiveness and always with a smile on their faces. The members at Caltowie Bowling Club are very proud of their girls, the whole club take a ‘grandparental’ pride in these two young ladies.
Pat Saltmarsh, who submitted this article, sends congratulations and good bowling vibes on behalf of the Caltowie Bowling Club members who see a great future for both Jane and Alison.
