SA Super League Round 4 Results

by admin on August 10, 2018

A wet Winters night greeted players and spectators alike for Round four of the SA Super League played under lights on Friday August 10th at the Salisbury Bowling Club. With some high profile spectators including Mayor Gillian Aldridge, Former Australian International Mark Casey and Bowls Victoria representative Sean O’Kane in tow the crowds gathered for another great night of Lawn Bowls. The SA Super League encouraged the theme for round 4 to be “Put a mat down for our farmers” with 100% of donations going towards supporting our local SA farmers. As always you can’t doubt the spirit of our bowls community and thanks to some very generous donations being made we raised around $1100, and thank everyone greatly for the contributions.

Round 4 began seeing the Northern Knights taking on the Mallee Pirates. Both teams entered the contest with a 2-1 record and had strong line ups selected to try and claim the win. Darren Warner again represented the Knights in the singles this time matched up against Simon Dorr representing the Pirates. A hot start from Warner with some good drawing and powerful drives saw him open up an early advantage, despite the best efforts of veteran Dorr who closed within one with two ends remaining, Warner played the big bowls when it counted over the last two ends to claim a 22-15 victory for the Knights. In the Pairs, Jack Trenorden & Kane Coulls teamed up for the Knights to take on Jeff Davis & Josh Thompson for the Pirates. The match to follow was a see-sawing affair but a well timed Super End in favor of the Pirates proved to be the difference claiming 8 shots on the 11th end which would see them chalk up a 15-25 victory. With not much separating the overall scoreboard the triples would prove pivotal with Brent Marshall, Luke Pietersma and Todd Brand representing the Knights against David Carter, Adam Forbes and Gary Thompson. A fast start from the Pirates trio who were all contributing with some great bowls made it very difficult for the Knights to work their way into the game, a big win for the Pirates 6-32 which would swing the overall scoreboard in their favour. The final result reading 43-72 in favour of the Pirates, with the Knights taking home 2 points to the Pirates 10.

On the other side of the green the Heysen Comets took on the Western Rogues, with some big players matched up against each other, this one shaped up as one of the games of the tournament and didn’t disappoint. Experienced singles campaigners Ashley Halls of the Comets and Simon Geater-Johnson of the Rogues squared off. Halls played some great bowls and made the going extremely difficult for Geater-Johnson with consistent draw bowling and conversions when required. Halls was up by 19-7 after twelve ends, before a late comeback was staged by Geater-Johnson, it proved to not quite be enough with Halls winning 19-15 for the Comets. The pairs match up saw the Comets duo of Ben Harris and James Gregory pitted against the Western Rogues’ Ashley Klose and Josh Studham. The Rogues started strong out of the blocks racing to a 7-0 lead, before the Comets skipped by Gregory reeled them back in. A solid six helped the Studham skipped Rogues pair back in the clear 17-9, and whilst the Comets battled hard, the Rogues ran out with the victory 23-19. In the triples line up, the Comets had Jackie Gardiner leading, with Josh Chopin and Scott Thulborn rounding out the team against the Rogues Sam Dietrich, Jayden Zeller and Max Kleinig. This encounter was set to be a thriller from the outset, and didn’t disappoint. Scores were level at 6-all after 8, before superb usage of a Super End saw the Comets pick up a 3, and double it to jump out 12-6 in a single end and start to gain momentum. At the 15th end with the Comets up 18-9, the Rogues pair used a Super End to great effect and their count of 3 doubled to 6 to springboard them back into the game at 18-15, two quality ends saw the Comets up 20-16 going into the last end, and the ability to call their last Super End again proved effective for them, doubling a count of three to take the game 26-16. The Heysen Comets registered the overall win with a 64-54 scoreline.
The 8pm session for Round 4 saw the top of the table South Eastern Spartans against the Central Chargers. The singles matchup saw the Spartans’ Blake Fiebig lining up against the Chargers’ Craig Mills, Fiebig started strongly with a 8-2 lead, before Mills started pegging him back and levelled the score at 9-all on 13, an ineffective Super End for Mills saw Fiebig collect a single, before doubling a score of 2 courtesy of a Spartan’s Super End and moving to a 14-9 lead. Fiebig held out to take the game 17-10 for the Spartans. Nathan Black and Tyson Wilson lined up again for the Spartans in the Pairs, with the Chargers represented by Ewen Graham and Steve Dennis. The young Spartans combination absolutely bolted out of the blocks, racing ahead to a 15-0 after 6 ends lead. A successful Super End for the Chargers got them on the board, and although they fought hard, the Spartans ran out victors with a 25-14 win. The Triples for the Chargers were headed up by Patria McGrath, Adrian Green and Mark Haines, with the Spartans trio of Jodi Kotz, Ken Holtham and Tony Devlin. The Chargers claimed the early honours firing on all cylinders with a Super End first end, a four converting to an eight to be 8-0 ahead. Some tight bowls from both teams saw the scores almost leveled up at 10-9 on 8 with the Spartans just down, before the Chargers once again picked up the pace to jump ahead 17-9. The Spartans trio battled hard and got themselves back within striking distance, however the Chargers proved too strong to take the triples 23-17. The South Eastern Spartans had another overall win to keep their momentum going and stay top of the table with a 59-47 win over the Central Chargers.

The final match up was the Southern Blazers and Eastern Raiders, both sides had plenty to play for sitting outside the top four and looking to make a push up the ladder. The Singles match up had Geoff Munn again trusted with the singles duties for the Blazers squaring off against Tony Treloar for the Raiders. It was a good contest throughout however Treloar was able to keep Munn at arm’s length for the whole game claiming a wire to wire victory 9-18. In the Pairs Ashley Whiley and Marc Evans represented the Blazers against Tony Lucas & Mitch Percy for the Raiders. Three proved the lucky number for the Blazers duo as they collected four counts of three across the match to propel their scoring whilst the Raiders were mainly limited to scoring ones or twos. Ultimately the teams entered the final end with scores squared at 18 where the Blazers claimed a solitary shot to secure a 19-18 victory. Finally the triples match up was showcased on our live stream rink with Karen Gatto, Gavin Pfeiffer & Justin Parkinson for the Blazers against Laini McGorman, Michael Lodge & Chris Flavel. The Blazers took an early lead with a 14-9 scoreline at the halfway point. The Raiders began their comeback and had the deficit down to one entering the last end. No one would have predicted the result with the Raiders claiming four shots on the final end to snatch a 17-20 victory which would assist in the overall proceedings. The final scores saw the Southern Blazers 45 defeated by the Eastern Raiders 56 with the Blazers taking home 2 points and the Eastern Raiders claiming a handy 10 points to put them in touch with the top 4.
